Fruit bushes offer several benefits. The first great thing is that they look very nice, especially when they bloom during the flowering period and the second great thing is that they give you fruit that you can reach easily. You can make a whole range of healthy treats using various fruit…These treats are usually very beneficial to your health and may even save you few trips to the pharmacy. Fruit bushes are mainly undemanding plants and if you follow basic requirements you can grow them successfully. So, which are the most beautiful?

Sea buckthorn

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) grows well even in poor soils and it is frost-resistant, so you can grow it in cold climates too. It grows as a small tree with silvery leaves and produces orange coloured fruit. The fruit is very healthy and provides a plethora of health benefits. It is mainly used to strengthen the immune system, treat skin diseases, fight dementia and it even helps with body regeneration (usually after radiotherapy). It is full of vitamin E, which slows down the aging process and supports healthy and beautiful skin. People usually make jams, syrups and tinctures from sea buckthorn.

Honeyberry

The Latin name is Lonicera caerulea var. kamtschatica. It is traditionally grown in Russia and the Far East. At the turn of May and June it produces purple coloured fruit. This shrub is a very though specimen and it can handle frosts down to -45 °C. Poor soil is not a problem, but due to rather shallow roots you should water well during dry periods. The fruit is rich in antioxidants that provide number of health benefits. Jams or marmalades are the most common foods people make from honeyberry but the fruit is great in dumplings or desserts too.

Black chokeberry

Some of you may know this great shrub as aronia. The Latin name is Aronia melanocarpa, but there are other popular names.It is a bush, but if properly grafted, it can also grow as a tree and can reach a height of up to 3 meters.It produces white flowers that turn into black berries – during the autumn. The plant is resistant to freezing temperatures during winter but also to spring frosts. Aronia fruit is widely used to slow down the aging process and to treat various cardiovascular diseases and even to prevent cancer… It is great in juices, syrups, jams or in various tinctures.

Chinese wolfberry

The Latin name is Lycium barbarum , but you may know it as goji berry. It is a sprawling perennial bush. Thanks to its sprawling properties it is still used to cover slopes. It will grow almost anywhere. Medicinal effects of goji berry have been known for more than two thousand years. These benefits include strengthening of the nervous system and the immune system and overall increase in vitality . Fruit is usually dried and used in a dry form. Dried berries are added to cereals, porridges, yogurts or muesli.

Magnolia berry

The Latin name is Schisandra sinensis and it is the most demanding shrub from the ones we have mentioned. It needs fertile soil, regular watering and even fertilization. The fruit is loaded with vitamin E and other substances beneficial to human health. People prepare various juices, extracts and tinctures from the fruit. They are used to replenish energy, to suppress depression, anaemia and even to help with lung disease treatments. Note: consumption increases blood pressure.
