Orchids growing follows certain rules. Here are four tips to do it right

Orchids

Do you grow indoor beauties belonging to the Phalaenopsis genus or the increasingly popular Dendrobia at home? Well, if you do, you may be wondering how often you should water or how to care for your orchids after they are done flowering. The answers are pretty straightforward.

If you follow few simple principles, you will enjoy beautiful flowers for many months every year.

Watch out for drafts

Orchids do well in a regular room temperature, but they really hate drafts – even an ordinary portable fan or open window may be a problem. Also remember that orchids like Dendrobium and Cymbidium require cooler temperate that occurs in autumn and winter to be happy and the also need a dry season! Otherwise, they will not flower.

Careful with watering

As for orchids, you need to remember that too much watering is much worse than not enough. Follow a simple rule – if the roots of your orchid are still green, then the plant is sufficiently hydrated and you should only water when they turn grey.

Choose the right spot

Place your home tropical beauty near a very bright window but where it is not exposed to direct sunlight. So, the best spot should be the east and west windows where it is not too hot. You may use south windows but you need to cover the flower pot with a curtain, for example.

Trimming after flowering

Different types of orchids bloom at different times. Trimming usually means removing the entire stem. However, if you grow Phalaenopsis species, cut the stem by no more than one third as it will bloom again.
