Now is the best time to propagate strawberries

Strawberries

Do you feel that this year your strawberries are not producing as much as the last year? The weather may not be to blame. It may be the age of your strawberries because the ability to produce fruit decreases every fourth or fifth year and you should be ready to change that.

You will face this issue if you grow cultivated varieties of large-fruit strawberry (Fragaria annanassa). Its wild predecessor, the common strawberry (Fragaria vesca), deals with this problem on its own, by creating large and compact strawberry shrubs. This original strawberry is known as the wild strawberry.

Glass of water as the best way of propagation

Fortunately, strawberries will propagate rather easily. They form runners regularly that create new young plants. . However, it would be a mistake to plant runners in the ground and wait. You need to pay attention to the condition of individual runners. As soon as the typical heart-shape crown forms, you need to separate it from the mother plant.

Put young seedlings in a glass of water and let them take root. They will do than quicker and better than in ground. As soon as the root system it strong, plant them outdoors. If there are more seedlings on one runner, plant only the largest and strongest one. The smaller ones rarely do well.

When and how to plant strawberries

Plant strawberries in a new location to prevent disease transmission. The typical spacing should be 30×40 centimetres. Dig a separate hole for each strawberry, but before that, loosen the soil and get rid of all weeds! Pour water into the hole and plant it. Make sure that the heart is above the ground.

Strawberries planted in this way should grow strong and should bloom and bear fruit in the following spring. Strawberries offer plenty of nutrients such as vitamin C and vitamins belonging to the B group, vitamin K, vitamin E, and manganese, beta-carotene (provitamin A), potassium and copper.
