How to winterize ornamental grasses
Many gardeners grow different types of ornamental grasses to improve the appearance of their gardens. A green grass carpet is not the only thing that makes your garden original. You may also other grasses to create interesting details and original look. But how should you winterize all these grasses and help them survive throughout the winter?
Summer and winter decoration
Ornamental grasses have become a rather popular decoration. They are used to create interesting corners or create the right atmosphere around your swimming pool for example . The main advantage is that various grasses decorate your garden not only during the season but during the winter time too. However, if you need grasses to look nice during the winter you need to take few steps to protect them properly.
Do not cut tall grass
A basic rule of thumb says that tall grasses should not be cut before the winter. Yes, many of us have the tendency to do so because the grass is dry, the colour is brownish and not very “tempting”. If you cut, the roots could rot due to excessive moisture. Grasses usually can deal with freezing temperatures, but not with excessive water. Dry winter is better than “wet” winter. In any case, you need to do the necessary steps based on the weather.

Provide the necessary nutrients
Ornamental grasses are able to grow in poor soils, but providing additional nutrition will support more vigorous growth. So, you should fertilize in autumn and use a universal fertilizer. You can also spread bark mulch around wrapped bundles to prevent weeds from growing and provide a little extra protection from freezing temperatures. Another option is pebbles to use small stones to cover the grass bed.
Tie tall bundles together
Too much snow can bent and literally bury delicate grass stems and break them eventually. So, you do not cut, but you tie them together and even create interesting shapes.Use a rope and tie grass into bundles. People used to do the same thing with grains in fields. This will protect grasses from heavy snow and you will add a a creative touch to winter garden.
