How to support growth of peace lilies

Peace lily

Spathiphyllum, also known as the peace lily, is one of the most attractive and undemanding plants that will thrive even in harsh and changing conditions found in your bathroom for example. Nevertheless, even peace lily may give you problems and the most common problem is that your plant grows many beautiful green leaves, but no flowers. Why is that and can you do something about it?

A peace lily improves the quality of air

In addition to its beauty, these plants are also known to improve the air quality in your room. Peace lilies handle airborne pollutants well. They actually absorb them. Some of the harmful substance that we often found in the air include formaldehyde, benzene, xylene and carbon monoxide. Peace lilies can clean the air for you and you will breathe better. This wonderful plant comes from Central and South America.

Flowering

Flowers are unusual and beautiful and the time when peace lily ”decides” to bloom is virtually unlimited. It may decide to flower even in winter during the heating season. That should not be a problem. But what if you do not see flowers for a very long time. The cause is usually a small mistake in cultivation and the plant does not mind this mistake at all. It is doing okay, but without flowers . If you correct the little mistake, you will be able to enjoy the white or greenish flowers again.

Location

One of the most common growing mistakes includes placing the plant in a shade or partial shade. The plant can survive in such conditions rather easily, but these conditions are not ideal for proper growth. So, if your plant is not blooming, you may have placed it in a dark environment. Well, if that is the case, simply move the plant to a brighter location while avoiding direct sunlight. Diffused light is the way to go.

Humidity

Peace lilies are tropical plants and therefore love humidity. The heating season in particular can be a very demanding time. But what about if flowers fail to appear even in spring or summer? Well, in this case, you need to increase the humidity and you may do so using the following:

  • Get a humidifier.
  • Place the plant on a bowl with pebbles and water. The water may not touch the flower pot where you grow your peace lily.
  • Place more plants in a group – more plants will retain moisture better.
  • Use a spray bottle around the plant or spray the mist directly on leaves from time to time. Never spray the flowers or petals!

Fertilization

All plants need more nutrients during the flowering period, so you should fertilize. Choose one that is suitable for flowering plants and follow the instructions on the package. Just make sure that the fertilizer contain less nitrogen, as nitrogen promotes the growth of green parts (leaves) at the expense of flowers.

Hard water

We all know that rainwater is best for watering, but if for some reason you need to use tap water, you must make sure that it is not too hard. Hard water may prevent peace lily from flowering. If you have a problem with hard water, use a special filter to remove minerals, or add a few drops of lemon juice or a teaspoon of citric acid to the watering can.
