How to store cabbage properly and make it last until spring
Proper preparation is the most important thing! And should you properly prepare cabbage for the winter? Well, preparation for storage is essential and it includes the following steps.
To begin with, remember that late varieties of cabbage are more suitable for long-term storage. These varieties are harvested before the first frosts hit. Early varieties are not suitable for storage. Period. The actual preparation depends on the storage method.
How to preserve cabbage at home?
Yes, it is possible but there are only few proven methods. To store cabbage properly you need to find a suitable place in your house or apartment and that may be a problem. Basically, you have two options: your balcony or refrigerator. If you live in an old fashion apartment that still has a pantry, which gets really cold in winter, you may use the pantry too. Pantry is actually the most suitable for vegetable storage.

You cannot store cabbage for a long time at normal room temperature. If you want to store cabbage at home and you don’t have the suitable space , try wrapping it in a foil or paper. The additional packaging extends the shelf life by approximately one fifth.
How to store cabbage on your balcony
A balcony is good but it cannot be too cold, otherwise cabbage may freeze and go bad. You need to wrap cabbage in a paper to protect it from temperature fluctuations – it may fall down below freezing point. Paper wrapping is good for balcony and foil is suitable for more stable environment.
Cabbage heads should be stored loosely and should not touch each other. Do not forget to check them regularly. Once a month is enough at the beginning , but the closer the spring gets, the more often you have to check. It is worth it. Use heads that are not in the best condition first.
