How to plant lilies correctly
Lilies are wonderful colourful plants and any gardener who wants to enlighten his garden should grow them. Lilies come in just about every colour you can think of and they smell wonderful too. There are many types of lilies and when you considering growing lilies you should take into account how frost resistant variety you want. Some lilies are exotic and like it warm and you should grow them indoors in flower pots. Bulbs of lilies are often sold in the spring and rarely in the fall – but you can plant them now!
Suitable spot
Lilies thrive in a sunny location and anything in a shade, even under trees, or near buildings is not good. Lilies growing in a shade will produce much smaller flowers and will stretch and twist to find more sunlight. Soil should be sandy, loamy and fertile. A great idea is to use compost early. The ideal soil pH should be from 5.5 to 7.0 and must be able to drain water well as bulbs exposed to excessive moisture tend to rot and get various diseases.

Planting
Prepare the soil first. Remove all weeds and other debris and loosen the soil to a depth of up to 30 cm. Crush as many lumps as possible – you need to have a well-loosened soil. You can plant frost-resistant bulbs in early autumn and in spring. In September (mid-October at the latest) all bulbs must be in the ground. If you plant later, your lilies will not have enough time to develop a sufficient root system and a cold weather can destroy them easily. Spring is much better time for planting and there is much wider range of plants you can choose from. If you plant in spring, do it at the end of April.
How deep?
Select only bulbs that look healthy and do not show any signs of damage or disease. Bulbs must be firm to the touch. The planting depth depends on the variety you have. Low varieties should go 10 to 15 cm deep and the distance between individual bulbs should be 25 cm. Tall varieties require a depth from 15 to 20 cm and a distance from 30 to 50 cm .Place bulbs in the pit and cover with soil. Gently press down.
