How to grow yucca correctly

Yucca

Yucca is a very popular plant. It is not expensive and it looks beautiful and you get plenty of bang for your buck and it does not require any special care. Yucca is grown as a houseplant in our climate. It has an interesting stem topped with a crown made of pointed oblong leaves. If you forget water yucca or simply “forget” about it for a while, it should not be a problem. Yucca will forgive you. It can deal with direct sun as well as with a partial shade.

Growing yucca

Yucca is a slow-growing plant, but this is actually a great advantage… You do not have to transplant it often. Once every two to three years and you do that by removing the top layer of soil with a shovel and replacing it with a fresh soil! That is not even transplanting. Temperature should not fall below 7 °C. The ideal soil should contain compost mixed with little sand to improve water drainage. Use heavier and sturdy pots because yucca can get heavy.

Watering and fertilization

Less is better. Yucca will not tolerate excessive watering. If it sits in water it will rot but it will tolerate drought. Water only when the few centimetres of soil is dry. . Excess water should drain away so, make sure to provide a well-permeable soil and a pot with drainage holes. Reduce watering in winter. Only fertilize once every two months in spring and use a liquid indoor fertilizer for flowers. Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to keep them shiny and dust-free.

Care and propagation

If yucca has grown too big, you can cut the trunk to the desired height. You will have just a stump in the flowerpot but only for a while. It should come to life soon. Use the cut piece to grow a new plant. The easiest way is to separate a young plant from the base of the trunk. Do this in spring by cutting it off with a sharp knife. Let the wound dry for a few days and then plant it in a pot. Water and store in a warm place.
