Have you ever heard of Guzmania? You did not? Well, if you need some attractive flowers to enlighten your place then you’ve come to the right place. Guzmania is a really beautiful flower that blooms in winter and can make your room cosier during cold winter days. Well, you have to take a really good care of them of course. This plant comes from tropical rain forests in the Central and South America. Let us take a look and reveal how to properly grow Guzmania.

A beautiful flower – the reward for your care

If youtake good care of Guzmania, you can be sure that you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers. The inflorescence will include red or orange colours but depending on the cultivar you choose you may also see white or yellow leaves. The trunk may be long or short, again depending what you choose. If you plan to put Guzmania on a narrow windowsill, be aware that it may not fit. For example, Orangeade or Magnifica are very large cultivars and windowsill is not for them.

How to grow Guzmania

Don’t forget that it is a tropical plant. Even in winter, it needs to be in a room where the temperature ranges from 18 to 22 °C. Make sure you choose a bright location not directly exposed to sunlight. Don’t forget to use an atomizer or spray to create dew. Proper air humidity is required. If you plan to grow Guzmania on a windowsill use a container with Keramzit fertilizer or peat.

Substrate, fertilization and propagation

Soil substrate is very important and it should include decomposed peat and bark. It must retain proper amount of moisture. Use soft water but very sparingly during flowering. Water should only be added to the middle leaf rosette. Propagation is rather easy. All you have to do is to separate offshoots in the spring and add a mild fertilizer to maintain proper nutrient content.
