How to get your pool ready for the winter
Pleasant summer temperatures are gone and you had better get ready for freezing weather and snow. If you live in a mountain area you may have seen snow already but people living in low altitudes still have time before the real winter hits. Well, not everyone loves winter fun… and if you live in warmer area you have more time to winterize. So, how to winterize your pool properly?
You need a skimmer net
If you have an open swimming pool you need to get ready for the arrival of true winter and make sure that your pool will be in working condition the next year. The first step is to clean the pool. You need to get a net and a telescopic rod to pick up as much dirt as possible from the surface. A vacuum cleaner can make the job easier. You also need to focus on the pool filtration system. It needs to be flushed to make sure that water coming out of the system is clean and that dirt will not hinder the operation of the system.

Reduce or increase water pH
The quality of the water matters a lot. Water pH should range from 7.2 to 7.6. To do so, you need to use chemicals, either liquid or granules. These chemicals prevent calcium and scale deposits. To determine pH you need a tester in the form of a paper strips, tablets or drops.
Lower the water level
There is no need to completely drain the pool for the winter, just lower the water level, which should be about 20 cm below the level of your pool accessories, which may include various nozzles, a counter current unit or skimmers. Store these accessories in a dry place protected from freezing temperatures. If the pool walls are dirty above the water level, you clean them. To avoid total freezing of the remaining water, use so-called floating icebreakers . Place them diagonally across the entire pool. It is also recommended to treat the water with a winterizing solution, which is a chemical that prevents bacteria and algae from growing and even cloudiness (turbidity).
