How to deal with a loss of your beloved pet

Mourning the loss of your beloved pet is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, it may be comparable to a grief associated with the loss of a family member or friend. Grieving for your pet depends on other factors too.

Our animal companions live with us for a very long time and if your pet suddenly “disappears” you feel emptiness and sorrow. Animals understand and feel their owners and are able to communicate rather well with them. Their behaviour often brightens our day in the cute and silly way that we love so much. Naturally, losing such companion is painful.

Talk about your loss

You may not feel like talking about it at first, but do not worry, it is okay. Few people can open up about their loss. For starters, talk to at least one person who understands how you feel. It will help you. You should also communicate with children affected by the loss of a pet. You need to take into account their age of course, but always try to tell the truth. You should also take into account the circumstances of your pet’s death.

Bury your pet

You need to define a boundary between life and death and that is why you should bury your pet – even if you only scatter the ashes. The ceremonial approach is actually good for your psyche. If you do not want to use your garden (it may not be possible due to laws), organize a funeral in a pet cemetery.

You do not need to scatter the ashes in a pet cemetery. You can put ashes in a beautiful glass jar or scatter ashes along your pet’s favourite walking route. When you walk this path you will remember your pet, and in a sense, your pet will be with you.

Social networks may help

Do not immediately condemn this approach. Try creating your own post in honour of your pet and add pictures and videos of your pet. This will show others that you care and that you are going through a difficult time. Other people comments may help you to cope with your loss.
