Health benefits of yogurt
Yogurt is a common and very popular food. We all know that yogurt is healthy but do you know how healthy? Do you know what it can actually do for our health? Well, let us shed some light on it.
We all know that traditional and organic foods are very popular and yogurt is one of the foods that has been around for ages. It was produced and sold in jars, and the production methods were rather smelly by today’s standards.
Benefits of yogurt
Yogurts produced today offer excellent taste, a rich calcium content and high nutritional value including high-quality proteins and potassium.
“It also appears that some non-nutritional yogurt components, such as little-known sphingolipids and butyric acid, may act as anti-cancer agents,” says Dr. M.E. Sanders of Colorado’s Dairy and Food Culture Technologies. “Fermentation converts milk proteins into certain peptides, some of which appear to be biologically active and are able to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of cancer”.

Living cultures are the most valuable properties of yogurt
But the list of important substances does not end there. Yogurt is full of live cultures known as probiotics (the better quality yogurt, the higher number of probiotics). “Epidemiological studies have shown that high consumption of dairy products with probiotics may reduce the risk of colon and breast cancer in humans,” said Dr. Ian Rowland from the Northern Ireland Centre for Health and Nutrition at the School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Ulster.
Probiotics also help people who have problems with lactose. “When lactose intolerant people consume fresh yogurt with live cultures, flatulence is significantly lower than when consuming heat-processed yogurts that do not contain live cultures,” says Dr. Denise Savaiana of the Department of Food and Nutrition at Purdue University in Indiana.
