Growing orchids – practical tips

Orchids

Orchids are beautiful indoor plants and not as difficult to grow if you know how. Especially, if you choose the Phalaenopsis variety which come in many different colours. Orchids may be divided into two basic droops – regular and small (mini) varieties. The best way to display orchids is probably on your windowsill. As mentioned above, if you provide basic requirements you should be able to grow orchids easily and you do not need to care for them every day. Yes, there are less demanding indoor flowers, but still orchids are somewhere in the middle.

Transplanting orchids

Orchids do not like to be transplanted however, if you want to transplant because the pot is full of roots for example and you feel that you should, then do it but keep in mind that you should transplant no more than once every three years. We should also point out that a pot full of roots is not a big deal.

Orchid is not a parasite

Common orchid are epiphytes, meaning they grow attached to trees, but they are not parasites and they do not deprive the tree of nutrients. They get moisture from the soil and that is enough. When you grow orchids at home you need to use a special substrate for orchids, which is a coarse substrate that ensures that orchids get the necessary air.

Flowerpot selection

Have you noticed that many orchids grow in transparent pots? Well, it is not because people want to see the root systems but because roots are involved in photosynthesis so, a transparent flowerpot is an advantage. However, if you grow orchids in a sufficiently bright place then the part above the ground can handle the extra load. So, choose a translucent pot if your orchids do not get enough light.

Fertilizing

Fertilizers are usually added to a watering can. You can also spray water with a small amount of fertilizer on leaves. Fertilizing is very important because coarse substrate usually does not provide sufficient amount of nutrients and will get depleted over time. Fertilize from spring to autumn and use a fertilizer designed for orchids only.
