Grow your own figs at home
Figs are very well-known but unfortunately, the majority of us knows only dried figs, especially around Christmas. Fortunately, today we can buy almost any subtropical and tropical fruit in supermarkets and enjoy fresh figs too. Figs are extremely juicy and full of crunchy grains and you do not have to rely on foreign production. There are special varieties that can survive even in colder climates. Well, “our” fig trees will not grow into majestic trees as in the Mediterranean, but you can still grow plenty of fruit.
Ideal growing conditions
First, you need to be aware of summer and winter temperatures. Ideally, the temperature should be between 21 and 26 °C in summer and between 8 and -1 °C in winter. Frost-resistant varieties can handle temperatures below -20 °C. In summer, you can take the plant outside and put it in your garden or balcony that gets plenty of sun. Make sure the plant faces southeast or south. Watering is quite frequent in summer. Use room temperature water that has been sitting for a while. You may spray leaves with water – ideally first thing in the morning. Water less frequently in winter.

Transplanting
Fig tree grows quite quickly during the first three years and you need to transplant. Probably once a year, and later, once every two to three years. Fig tree needs nutritious soil. Do not forget to make a drainage layer and drainage holes at the bottom of the pot.
Care
You may prune after harvest. Try to make the crown lighter and remove twisted shoots and shoots that grow inwards.
Health benefits
Figs have been used in folk medicine for ages. All parts of the plant are actually used. Fruit is loaded with vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for human health. Figs have antipyretic (fever reduction) and anti-inflammatory properties and have been used for this very purpose since ancient times. They are also used to fight colds and bronchitis. Another use is to fight a physical fatigue, mental strain or to improve sleep.
