Grow your own citrus tree at home
Fruits or vegetables sold in stores usually do not taste as good as home-grown produce. Most of us would agree that this mainly applies to strawberries, tomatoes or peaches. But even citrus fruits, such as lemons or tangerines, grown at home in our rather cold climate taste better than store-bought citruses.
If you want to grow and harvest your own lemons, you should follow some rules and you should be able to grow great fruit.
What do citruses need to grow well?
Citrus plants prefer a slightly acidic to acidic soil that retains light and airy structure even after a long time. You should water when necessary, not when it suits your time schedule or when you just remembered… Lemon trees need more moisture during the growth period and when the tree produces fruit. But in winter, as with many plants, you should let them rest and when March comes, you should gradually increase watering and continue to do so.
Choose varieties that can deal with cooler environments and those that you can move outside in summer. Those will do best in our conditions. Lemon trees are usually unable to survive outside during winter (although there are varieties that are able to do that).

Repotting
The best time to repot is in the spring, when plants are resting after the dormant period and when they are ready to grow again. Repotting provides the root systems with more space and therefore with increased nutrition, better water intake and stability.
Young citrus trees should be transplanted every year, and when they become stronger, you may do so once every 2 to 3 years, depending on the growth rate. Repot older trees only when the roots start to grow through the container or pot. If you do not want to transplant older trees, just replace the top or depleted soil. This way you save space on your terrace. Do not forget to fertilize thoroughly throughout the growing season.
