Grow gloxinia. This beautiful flower will make you happy

Gloxinia

Back in the days of our grandmothers, gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa) was a very popular flower, but it somehow disappeared from gardens and flower shops. This is rather pity, because even an averagely skilled gardener can grow it and the reward is a beautiful flowering plant.

The predecessor of today’s indoor gloxinia offered only small rather inconspicuous red flowers, but thanks to breeding you can obtain many varieties these days. That includes large, full-bodied, colourful flowers, most often available in white, purple and pink.

Growing gloxinia

This indoor beauty does not like sunny spots and that makes sense because it comes from the rainforests of Brazil. It will do best in warm and semi-shady places with high humidity. Make sure the temperature in the room never drops below 18 °C.

When you winterize gloxinia make sure the temperature is around 15 °C. Lower temperature can kill it easily. Winterizing is necessary for proper flower development.

Caring for gloxinia

The soil in the pot should always be slightly moist. To water properly, pour water onto the saucer under the flower pot. The plant cannot be sitting in water because leaves will rot quickly if the plant is flooded. Gradually reduce the amount of water after the flowering period is over and do not water at all in winter. And what about fertilization? During the flowering period, which is from March to August, you may use a fertilizer designed for flowering plants to replenish nutrients.

If your plant is attacked by red spider mite or other unpleasant parasites or diseases, you need to act immediately asthey can multiply very quickly and can completely destroy your indoor beauty, and that would be a shame.
