Grinding your own flour at home? Yes, a lot of fun and great result!
Everybody loves freshly baked goods, right? But what about taking it little further and bake pastries from your own homemade flower? It cannot get any better than this. Home-milled flour retains all the necessary substances and vitamins that our body needs, many of which are found in whole grain. These include for example iron, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin A, E, B1 and B2. Flower is subject to oxidation which can gradually destroy the good stuff but if you grind (mill) it yourself, you know that all the good stuff is still there. Grinding flour at home is not complicated and we shall show you how you can do it.
What makes homemade flour more valuable?
Well, the fact that you will be milling the entire grain – whole grain. You will not remove the outer grain layer where all the good substances so important for us live. The vast majority of flours bought in supermarkets are made from the “stripped” grain and therefore you are getting flour that has been robbed of the majority of the beneficial properties.

Grinding flour at home
Have you ever smelled a freshly ground flour? Probably not, but trust us, it is a unique experience. It smells fresh and “naturally” and you can tell by looking at it that it is very light and fluffy. As with any fresh food, the best way is to grind the flour and use it as soon as possible. You will not be grinding flour at home to make it last as long as possible, right? Manual grinding is also fun but you need to choose the right grinder and if you do, the fun begins.

Electric and manual grinders
The selection of the grain is also very important. Since you doing it for the health aspect, you should choose organic quality grain. You can get manual and electric grinders and we do not need to tell you that if you go electric your life will be easier. The body of the grinders is usually made of high-quality wood, but you can get less expensive models made of plastic or metal. Electric grinders are quite powerful and the power may range from 300 and 600 W.

Flour coarseness
You can set how fine you want your flour. The flour grinder we use is equipped with a funnel where you pour the grain and by turning the funnel you adjust the coarseness and you can observer the consistency of the flour while grinding. You can get extremely fine flour if you wish or very coarse flour. There are also grinders on the market that can make flakes from grain and unfortunately again, store-bought flakes are missing the good stuff because they are pressed under heat. Here is our flour grinding video so you can see for yourself.
