Getting rid of a mole using friendly methods

Mole

A mole is cute, especially if you see it in the popular cartoon, but if you see this little creature in your garden, you will not be happy. A mole can cause a lot of trouble and destroy ornamental plants as well as your crops. Once plants are attacked by a mole, there is usually no hope. Yes, we see the mole as a pest, but still, you do not want to use chemicals that will kill it. Before you get really mad and turn to chemical methods, try a natural one. The mole hates certain smells and it will try to avoid them. If your garden smells bad to the mole, you can deter it.

Garlic and aromatic herbs

Plants producing strong odours such as garlic or aromatic herbs such as marigold or basil are good for this purpose. All you need to do is insert few cloves of garlic (you can crush them to enhance the aroma) or a handful of herbs (use fresh herbs) into the mole’s passages or tunnels and add little bit of a vinegar. Vinegar and its pungent smell is another option as it makes the mixture of smells stronger.

Mole traps

There are a variety of mole traps you can buy. You may get traps that will kill them but there are also “friendly” traps. If you only want to scare the mole but not harm it, go for the friendly trap. Buy several of them and place them next to mole piles so, the mole cannot get out of the hole. When you catch one, move it as far away from your property as possible, and release it.

Mouldy citrus peel

Citruses have a very distinct smell and moles do not find it attractive at all. But if you also have mouldy citrus peels, even better. Throw peels in the mole hole or tunnel if you can.Moles should leave within few hours…

Aromatic oils

Another strong scent that can scare moles away and you should definitely try it. Drip a little essential oil on grass or other plants and around mole holes and the mole should get the message and leave.

Ultrasonic scarers

These days you can also buy ultrasonic devices, which are designed to deter moles and scare them from entering your property. Many garden stores sell them and these scarers will also help you to get rid of other rodents, as well as pigeons.
