Four tips to care for your lawn

Lawn

You do not need to use chemical sprays, fertilizers or herbicides to maintain your lawn properly. You do not even need to spend a lot of money on garden equipment to maintain it. If you follow these lawn maintenance steps, you will have a lawn that your neighbours will envy.

Clean your lawn from weeds regularly

Unfortunately, weeds are common on any lawn as various seeds are brought into your garden by birds, animals or even on your own shoes. You can pull out weeds and roots by hand or you can use a suitable tool. If you fail to get rid of weeds regularly, various unwanted plants will deplete your lawn from nutrients and moisture and your lawn will suffer as a result . Do not forget to remove moss, which unfortunately is an inseparable part of many lawns. Moss usually appears due to insufficient drainage, a large number of weeds, too much clay in the soil, etc. To get rid of moss permanently, you must first find the cause of the problem. Chemical sprays only help at the beginning but moss will reappear again.

Raise the blades on your mower

If you want a better-looking lawn, you need to mow higher. Mowing your lawn too low can cause several problems. When mowing to low you “open” the lawn for weeds and various seeds which can easily get in soil and grow. If you cut more than 1/4 of the height at once, you will put a lot of stress on your lawn and it will take longer to recover while making your lawn more susceptible to diseases. Proper mowing height provides sufficient shade to retain moisture, thus preventing the grass from turning brown.

Fertilization

When you mow your lawn, you are also removing some nutrients. Grass and plants need nourishment throughout the entire year, and therefore it is a good idea to apply organic fertilizers when needed. Do not forget to water your lawn regularly. Do not throw grass clippings in the trash, as they provide nitrogen and other trace minerals that nourish the soil. Cut grass belongs to your composter.

Let the soil breathe

If you walk often on lawn, you are “squeezing” the air out of the ground and roots can suffocate. You need to aerate your lawn well each spring. If your lawn is in poor condition, you can do it twice a year, and soon you should see an improvement.
