Flowers that can help you kill weeds in your garden

Flowers

Did you know that you can fight weeds by planting flowers that can help you to get rid of weeds? Well, you can and we shall tell you which flowers are the best helpers. Use their beauty and unusual appearance to make your garden nicer and fight weeds at the same time. Sounds too good to be true? Well, you will be the judge.

Linum usitatissimum or flaxseed

Just sow flaxseed around your flower beds. It will flower during summer and push out unwanted weeds. Well, while flaxseed is still small you must help it and remove weeds by hand, but it will only help you after some time. Flaxseed is very resistant to drought and will grow well in stony ground. To achieve best results, combine flaxseed with tall lilies.

Sow on a wet or at least moist surface. Seeds germinate at 20°C and the plant blooms from the beginning of June to the end of July. To extend the flowering time remove dry flowers as soon as possible. If you grow from seeds, flaxseed will bloom about 2 months after germination.

What about California poppy (Eschscholzia californica)

California poppy is also resistant to drought and very easy to grow. Once it spreads over a certain area weeds have no chance. It grows between 20 and 40 centimeters tall and blooms all summer long and when flowering is over, it forms long capsules with tiny seeds.

You can sow the seeds outdoors in May or June. Spread seeds on a wet surface. A good idea is to plant lavender next to California poppy as it will improve the overall look.

The beauty of lilies of the valley

Lily of the valley is cute and can indeed help you to get rid of weeds but after some time it will start to behave like a weeds too… It will grow and sneak through all plants that will stand in its way and therefore do not plant any other plants next to lilies of the valley. It is even resistant to frost and drought and very undemanding. A good helper, but a tough enemy.
