English ivy not doing well indoors? Here is one common mistake

English ivy is a very popular indoor plant, but surprisingly, Hedera helix is a plant that does not do well indoors. Outdoors yes. It grows everywhere. Follow the right principles and turn your English ivy into a beautiful indoor plant.

Domestic varieties differ in size, shape and colour. We refer to the leaves of course. English ivy may have variegated leaves and the centre of leaves can have different colours, for example yellow, creamy. Varieties with white or gray leaves are a bit more difficult to grow.

The common green or different colour?

Green English ivy does not require that much light and it will do well in darker places, but variegated ivy needs much more light and you should definitely place it closer to the window, but at the same time do not forget to protect it from direct sunlight.

Cold or warm?

Regardless of the variety, Hedera helixdoes does well at room temperature and you do not need to bother with wintering. That is good news. However, if you want provide some winter care, you need to know that varieties with green leaves prefer cooler room temperature (10-15 °C) and varieties with variegated leaves prefer medium warm temperatures (15 -18 °C).

High temperature combined with poor care may cause leaf drying and encourage development of various mites. Never put Hedera helix near heat radiators or fireplaces. If there is no other way, move it to a cooler place from time to time.

Watering

Make sure that the soil is constantly moist. In addition to watering, a great idea is to spray leaves with soft, lukewarm water frequently. Ivy also likes humus and needs slightly acidic soil, otherwise it will not grow that much.
