Do you want your rockery to look nice and fresh at all times? Follow these tips below

Rock garden

Do you want to make your garden special? Well, how about a spectacular rockery in a dry place where nothing else grows anyway. It is really simple. You just need to know where to start.

A rockery is usually a small and decorative part of your garden and before you go and build one, you need to observe requirements of individual plants and choose the right species. So, how should you create a rockery that looks great but it is also easy to maintain?

Where to place the rock garden

The perfect rock garden should definitely be placed on a south-facing, well-lit slope. At the same time it should be protected from strong winds. By building your rockery on a slope you ensure that it will get plenty of sun, but also proper water drainage. If you want to place your rockery on a flat surface, you need to equip it with a good drainage system. No tall trees should grow near the rockery. Trees create shade and prevent sunlight. Further, raindrops falling from trees promote mould and fungi and you do not want that.

If you want your rockery to look natural, use some stones with sharp edges so they look like rock fragments. You can plant the selected plants in cracks in vertical walls, from where water quickly evaporates, and that suits a number of alpine species.

When and how to plant

The good news is that you can plant these beauties throughout the entire growing season but avoid rainy times when the soil is very wet. That would be too much of a shock for your plants. When planting, make sure that the root neck of all plants is always slightly above the ground. When done, slightly press the soil around the plant and cover with gravel or coarse sand.

Now, you need to water the young plants. Planting into rock crevices is a bit more complicated and you should get only young seedlings with a well-developed root system. Shorten the roots and plant them in a small amount of suitable substrate. Water carefully.
