Do not waste rainwater!

Not a drop wasted – that should be the motto of everyone who is concerned about the environment and considering how expensive everything is nowadays, it should be the motto that we all respect. Rainwater usually goes straight to the waste pipe but it may be collected for other purposes. You may use it to flush your toilet or to do your laundry.

Imagine this. Rainwater flows from the roof into basement tanks where it is filtered and then malá vodárna  used by the appropriate appliance. This is how it should work and it often does in many development projects, concerned with an efficient water management. And what an expert says about this?

Why should we use rainwater?

It is important not to waste drinking water but also rainwater, mainly because of economical and environmental reasons. “Not so far in the past, certain building regulations began to require that a developer must specify how rainwater will be disposed or used. This issue was mainly addressed through absorption systems in the ground, but people soon realized that there is a better way,”says Vít Brainhof, a project manager for GARTAL development company.

Collecting water in a basement is one option – a kind of a first step followed by utilization. “In this case, you need to set up separate rises/pipes to bring water to toilets. A triple filtration is common to eliminate sediments. The third level allows you to use rainwater for washing machines, where separate pipes bring water not only to toilets, but also to washing machines. At this stage it is necessary to chemically treat water to eliminate harmful chemicals. This is done by more complex and more expensive technology,” says Vít Brainhof.

Additional water saving tips

However, if you are not doing major building modifications, you can also save water by using more energy-efficient appliances. The most common way is to use various rainwater barrels and use rainwater to water your garden.
