Devil’ s ivy. Popular and undemanding indoor plant

Devil’s ivy

Devil’s ivy (Epipremnumaureum) is mainly known for its beautiful heart-shaped leaves. This plant is amazing. It grows well even in a poor soil and can survive droughts and other abuse. If you provide it with basic needs, it will thrive and produce long shoots that you can direct and guide to places that you need to make more green and attractive. If well-grown and nourished, it is virtually impossible to kill it, which makes it a great plant for beginners who tend to neglect the necessary care.

Devil’s ivy

A great idea is to place it at an elevated position to make it grow and hang down. A shelf or cupboard for example. You can also use a hanging pot and place it under a ceiling. It can reach a length of up to 20 m, but when grown indoors it usually gets to 2 m or so . Did you know that devil’s ivy actually cleansthe air? Yes, it does. Even NASA use it for this very purpose but on the other hand it is toxic if ingested! So, you should definitely keep it out of the reach of children and animals. Wear gloves when handling (transplanting) because even the pot may irritate your skin and mucous membranes.

Growing requirements

Devil’s ivy does not like direct sun and it does not care much whether you put it in alight or shady spot however, too much shade may cause its leaves to lose their colourful pattern You can grow it in any room where temperatures ranges from 10 to 24 °C. These are basically all the requirements you need to comply with.

Care

A good idea is to let the soil dry out between individual watering, mainly from spring to autumn. Devil’s ivy can deal with droughts but if you water too much you can actually destroy it. Reduce watering in winter. Fertilizing may not be necessary, but if you want to fertilize, do it in spring and summer. Once a month is plenty. Transplant once every few years only and choose a flowerpot slightly bigger than the previous one. If devil’s ivy is too long, put on gloves and simply cut the shoots to the desired length. Even though devil’s ivy is resilient very much, a great idea is to dust off leaves from time to time. They will breathe better and look better.

Propagation

You can propagate by cuttings.Cut off a stem that has buds and place it in a glass of water. As soon as small roots appear you may transplant it into soil. Water and you are done.
