Crushed eggshells for your dog

Eggshells

We all know that ordinary eggs are among the most nutritious and complex foods and that is true both for humans and animals, specifically dogs. You may hear a different opinion from time, but the vast majority of experts agree that dogs should eat eggs. But we do not mean whole eggs, only the shells, because these are very beneficial for dogs.

The egg is an amazing powerhouse and it should be no surprise because life literally starts in it. It is also a huge source of protein and amino acids and it offers a large number of nutritional benefits, because it is loaded with nutrients, minerals and vitamins.

Eggshells as a substitute for meat?

Some dogs do not like bones at all especially, small breeds and therefore, eggshells can be a great alternative because they provide a digestible source of calcium.

To make use of eggshells you need to grind them first and wrap the powder around raw meat, or add them into minced meat or other feeds. Do not worry, eggshells will not affect the taste of the feed in any way and your dogs should have no problem with eggshells.

Can eggshells be harmful to dogs?

Some dog owners are afraid to give their pets eggs, especially egg whites, as they contain enzyme inhibitors, which can disrupt digestion in old or young dogs and may even damage the digestion process. This is not true. Eggs in fact, should be an important component of dog’s food. However, if your pet has a varied and balanced diet, you don’t need to worry about it.

How many eggs can a dog eat per week?

An average dog can eat several eggs per week, but it is recommended to slowly increase the number of eggs. First, start with one, add one more the next week and watch how your dog reacts. If eggs are causing a diarrhoea, it means that your dog’s digestive system is not working properly, but if you don’t see any negative effects your dog is all right.

Do not worry about salmonella either, as dogs are “well-equipped” to handle bacteria in raw foods. But make sure you feed high-quality eggs to your dog – get information about the product you are getting.
