Can you grow mushrooms in your garden? Yes, but there is something that no manual will tell you

Mushrooms

Probably everyone would like to grow mushrooms next to a house and have delicious mushrooms ready when needed. Why go to the forest when you can grow the same thing on your lawn, right? Have you walked among fruit trees and scattered remains of wormy hats with a desperate hope that the next year you will see mushrooms? Well, many people did that.

Unfortunately, we have bad news for you – this will not happen. Forest mushrooms live in symbiosis with specific tree species. So, if you don’t have at least a birch tree in your garden, you cannot hope to see mushrooms.

How does mycorrhiza work?

Mushrooms do not contain chlorophyll and they must obtain the necessary substances created by photosynthesis in a different way. Mushrooms draw the nutrients from the roots of trees and in return they help trees to manage water and certain nutrients. So, if you do not have at least some oaks, beeches or birches in your garden you will not see any mushrooms. You need to have heaths or lawns with birches, pines and spruces. That is the only possible way to grow forest mushrooms in your garden.

You can try to scatter leftover mushroom caps and stems at a suitable spot – as described above, and hope that mycelium will “take root” in the soil. You can also help a little if you bring the right dirt from the forest, including soft soil layer made of rotting leaves, needles and wood.

Apply directly to roots and you might be successful

You will achieve better results if you purchase standardized “seed packages”, which usually contain a mixture of mycelia of several edible species. This way you have a better chance that some mushrooms will take root in your garden. The best thing to do is to rake away soil from the roots of a suitable tree and apply mycelium directly to the roots. But even if you do everything right it takes several years before you see firth fruiting bodies.
