Bigleaf hydrangea cuttings will take root within a month – in a plastic bottle filled with sand.

Hydrangea

Do you adore bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) and its beautiful flowers? Sure you do. And what about wild hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) or climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris) growing on your pergola or garden arch?

Well, we have good news for you – you can propagate all these beauties by yourself with almost no effort at all. All you need is a larger plastic bottle and sand. That is it.

Propagating is simple

These plants cost a lot in garden shops and the main reason for that is that reproduction is not easy. This is true, but if you know a little trick you should be able to do it. Do not stick a young hydrangea cutting right next to the mother plant as it will most likely die.

But there is a better way. Take ordinary sand and a large plastic bottle. Cut 10-15 cm long cuttings from the mother plant and remove the bark from the lower part.

Fill a plastic bottle with sand

Take a large plastic bottle and cut off the top and fill it with regular sand, insert hydrangea cutting and water well. Cover the bottle with the part you just cut and place it in a bright and warm place (but no direct sunlight).

Thanks to the transparent plastic you can observe how the roots develop. And they do so rather quickly. After only a month, they should be strong enough and you can transplant it to its final location. Do not forget to mix the substrate with peat. Hydrangeas are acid-loving plants.Do you like this method? Good! Another great idea is to plant hydrangea together with Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) or climbing roses or the charming lpomoea. These plants look great together.
