Beautiful African violets are plants that can really enhance the look of your house or garden. These little and beautiful flowers come in different colours and remain cute for long time. They look amazing on a windowsill or inside a house. African violets are rather undemanding plants and do not pose any growing challenges. All you need to do is to fertilize it from time to time to maintain the plant’s vitality. How do you know that your violets need fertilizing? Can you make fertilizers at home? When does violet need a fertilizer?

Well, the simple answer is when it stops blooming and the leaves turn yellow and start to fall off. When this happens, the plant’s growth slows down significantly as it lacks nutrients and mineral substances. A small amount of soil in a pot is simply not enough for violets in terms of nutrition. If you notice these symptoms, you must act. We shall show you how to make a homemade fertilizer to maintain growth of violets.

Onion skins

If your flowers are not in good shape or have been attacked by pests, you may use onions as the first aid. You are going to make a fertilizer from onions. Put about 50 g of onion peel in 2 litres of boiling water. Mix everything and boil for 10 minutes. When done, let the mixture cool and infuse. Filter the mixture through a fabric before use. When done use immediately. Do not store.

Citrus peel

Citrus peel is rich in vitamins and nutrients that your violets will love. You can use either orange or lemon peel. Whatever you have at home. Chop the peel, put it in a container and pour boiling water in. Let it infuse for a day. When done dilute it with warm water in 1:10 ratio.

You can also use yeast

Yeast is a great fertilizer for African violets. Take a bowl and mix 5 grams of dry yeast with 5 litres of water and 2 spoons of sugar. Cover the bowl and leave it in a warm place for about 3 hours. When done, dilute dissolution in 1:5 ratio.

Black tea

Try sprinkling the soil in the flower pot with black tea leaves. When you water, nutrients from the leaves are released and your violets will benefit.
