A unique potato planting method that will increase your harvest

Planting potatoes is important because proper planting affects the overall yield. Many gardeners have their own special way but there are proven methods that can help you to increase your harvest. This method should also save you money. We shall take a look at this “trick” in detail. But first, let us focus on the basic but important requirements.

The right soil is the most important factor

Yes it is, and the following soil requirements seem to be ideal for potatoes:

  • light,
  • permeable,
  • porous,
  • sandy humus,
  • lots of minerals and organic substances.

Soil that contains lot of clay is not good especially, if there is a lot groundwater. You also need to pay attention to correct pH, which should be from 5.4 and 6.5. Potatoes do not really need to be fertilized assuming that you have provided the necessary nutrients before planting. A good idea is to add manure when preparing the soil. If you did not, you can still add some fertilizer later but it is better to do it before. You may also add ash and cover it with soil and on top of that you put potatoes.

The best potato planting time

Well, the best time ends right about now. Many gardeners plant potatoes during March and that is good. So, if you do not have potatoes in the ground yet, then you should really hurry up. You should use sprouted potatoes but not potatoes that have sprouted too much.

Correct planting depth

Correct depth depends on the soil, but also on weather conditions and the size of tubers you will be planting. However, the usual size should range from 8 and 12 cm. Cover planted tubers with a layer of soil – about 6 cm thick.

Plant cut potatoes

You do not have to plant whole potatoes. You may cut potatoes into several parts but make sure you do not damage the sprouts and you will be okay. Plant the cut parts as you would whole tubers. However, you must only plant the parts that have sprouts. Even thick-skin with sprouts will grow. But do not plant peals with sprouts.

Additional potato planting tips

Place potatoes about 30 cm apart, while the recommended row spacing is about 60 cm. Potatoes need plenty of water to germinate so water thoroughly. You can also place mulch around potato plants regularly.
