Can this inconspicuous herb protect fruit trees against freezing temperatures?
A critical period of spring is around the corner – the first half of spring. It may bring unpleasant morning frosts which can damage fruit trees to the point where you may lose the entire harvest.
How can you protect fruit trees against spring frosts? Well, there are several ways.
Apricots. Valerian to prevent freezing
Pay attention to weather forecast and when temperatures are falling you need to take an action. If the temperature falls even slightly below zero, it could be a big problem for apricots. Temperature slightly below freezing will kill all apricot flowers. Here is what you may do about it.
Spraying flowers with water
Get a really fine atomizer – one that produces a very fine water mist. To make the mist more effective, you need to add few drops of valerian – that is what the the old grandma’s recipe says. Ten or fifteen drops per litre of water should be enough.

If you do not have a fine atomizer, try placing water containers under and around the tree – the more, the better. Water will evaporate and the vapour will help you to protect flowers from frost.
Protecting trees from frost
You can also use fire… Make a sufficiently large fire that produces lot of smoke (at a safe distance from the tree of course). This will warm up flowers a bit and you may be able to avoid a significant damage. Use damp branches or grass to create plenty of smoke.
