Garden design – basic rules
You do not have to pay a garden designer to have a beautiful garden. If you understand basic principles, you can design a beautiful garden yourself. Yes, designer helps a lot but again, if you follow basic rules you can make your garden an attractive piece of art. Designer knows where individual plants should be and how to take advantage of various terrains. What you see as an obstacle, a designer can use it as an advantage, but you can learn to do the same.
First, ask yourself important questions
When designing a garden, you need to answer a few basic questions. The most basic one is what your garden is for. Do you want to use your garden for a relaxation and sunbathing for example, or do you want create more “active” garden (with sporting equipment for example)? Or do you want a place where you can have a party and barbeque in the summer? Should your garden represent your personality or do you want to grow fruit and vegetables? Can these be somehow combined together? Are you an active and passionate gardener or do you prefer spending your precious time elsewhere?

Garden design
Once you know answers to these basic questions, it will be easier for you to design your garden. Try to imagine your garden as an enclosed room. Plants are not inanimate objects – they will change their appearance over time, especially as they grow larger. A garden that looks nice at the beginning may look more like a jungle after few years.
Planting plants
If you just finished designing your garden, do not be alarmed if it looks empty. Keep in mind that plants will grow. If you want to create your garden quicker however, you can buy grown plants – for much higher price of course or you may choose fast-growing flowers and plants. But once these plants reach the desired size, you probably will have to remove them to maintain a sufficient space. It may also be necessary for the development of other plants.
Planning rules
Do not put garden decorations or large structures in the centre of the garden. Another recommendation is to create layers of vegetation. The larger the garden, the higher the vegetation should be. Start with lawns, then annuals and biennials, then perennials, then short shrubs, then tall shrubs and finally, trees.Do not go crazy and plant all types of plants. Keep it simple. This mainly applies to smaller gardens.
