Split-leaf philodendron – growing tips
Split-leaf philodendron (Monstera deliciosa) used to be very popular and its popularity is coming back mainly thanks to interestingly shaped leaves, grateful appearance and decorative function. There are several different types of these beautiful plants but the growing requirements are pretty similar. So, what should you watch for and how to create optimal growing conditions?
Gentle watering
Monstera comes from the rainforest and does not need too much light. You may place it in a shady corner further away from windows and create an interesting decoration. It does not require much light because it has strong leaves which allow the plant to manage water efficiently. Do not overwater! Water only when the substrate looks dry. When you water make sure that no water is standing on the surface for a long time. Monstera can deal with short-term droughts rather easily. During summer you should water little more and naturally, reduce watering to minimum during winter.

Nutritious and permeable soil
To make sure that your split-leaf philodendron gross well, you should transplant it into a new soil at least once every two years. To make the substrate more permeable, mix a regular garden substrate designed for houseplants with expanded clay or little stones . Make a drainage layer at the lower part of the pot. A good advice is to check for parasites or fungi on roots while you are transplanting. You may fertilize with products intended for green houseplants during the summer.
Monitor leaf status
The best indicator of your plant’s health are its leaves, which should be deep green without dark or light spots. For example, dark brown dry spots may indicate a lack of moisture. This may be a problem during winter when the air is overheated and dry. As soon as you notice dark brown spots spray mist on leaves.
