How do you know that onions are ripe enough?

Onions are among the most frequently planted crops. They are not difficult to grow and properly stored onions can easily last the whole winter and we all need to get any extra vitamins during the winter. The vast majority of meaty dishes requires onions in some shape or form, and European cuisines cannot do without them. Fried, baked, boiled, raw, salty and even sweet, the list goes on. In short, onions are universal but most importantly, onions offer plenty of health benefits.

Growing onions

Onions are most often grown from seedlings, which you buy in garden stores just before the recommended planting date. This also shows how popular onions are. Usually, you buy small bulbs which are ready for planting. Do not plant onions at the same spot over and over. Onions should not be planted at the same spot for the next three to four years. This is done to prevent diseases that can persist in the soil.

Watch out for excessive moisture

Too much rain or moisture is not good as it may cause onions to deteriorate, rot and mould. Unfortunately, you cannot control the weather, but you should check the weather forecast before harvesting, as heavy and long-lasting rain can reduce the quality of onions. So, rather than keep waiting, it is better to harvest onions earlier. Onions do fine in humus and lose soil. It must not be acidic and too wet. Although excess water is dangerous, onions, as any crop, need the correct amount of water.

Harvest

You can harvest onions when still fairly young and use them in salads. Chopped onion leaves are great for various bread spreads, for example. But onions should be fully ripe and big – as any vegetable, right? To achieve this, you need to observe onion plants, especially the green part above the ground. It should be flat and dry but there should be at least three green leaves on each plant. If possible, harvest onions on a sunny day, as you need to let them dry in the open air for several days. When dried enough, store onions in open containers (crates), that allow air to pass through well.
